Root Canals

root-canalsAt times when a tooth is either broken or has cavities into the nerve chamber of the the tooth and the patient is wanting to keep the tooth, Root canal therapy is needed. Root canal therapy or a root canal is a procedure in which the dentist removes the nerve tissue and remaining blood vessels from inside the tooth. To do this a small opening is made on the chewing surface of back teeth or on the back side of front teeth. Small instruments known as files are used to remove the nerve from inside the nerve chamber or canal, to the tip of the root. Once the nerve tissue as been removed from inside the canal it is then cleansed and filled back in with a rubber material called gutta percha. From this point the tooth no longer has the ability to sense hot or cold, however, the entire tooth including the root remains in the patients mouth. Once the root call is finished, it is most times recommended to place a crown over the tooth to protect it from breaking. There may be times where a specialist would be best to perform the root canal therapy. An endodonist is a dentist that has received two years additional specialized training just to perform root canals. Because of their additional training, equipment and expertise some teeth would be better treated by an endodontist. Upon exam Dr.smith will be able to guide you and answer any questions you may have about your root can options.
